Generic Information: SPINRAZA (Nusinersen)
SPINRAZA (nusinersen sodium injection) is the world's first disease-modifying therapy for spinal muscular atrophy (SMA), developed by Biogen. It is an antisense oligonucleotide (ASO) — a short synthetic strand of modified genetic material — designed to treat SMA caused by mutations or deletions in the SMN1 gene. SPINRAZA was first approved by the U.S. FDA in December 2016, subsequently authorized in more than 70 countries worldwide, and approved by China's National Medical Products Administration (NMPA) in 2019 as the first SMA therapy ever available in China. Following a landmark national reimbursement negotiation, SPINRAZA has been included in China's National Reimbursement Drug List, making this once-unaffordable therapy accessible to the vast majority of SMA patients in mainland China.
What Is SPINRAZA (Nusinersen) Used For?
SPINRAZA is indicated for the treatment of 5q spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) in pediatric and adult patients. SMA is a severe, progressive genetic neuromuscular disease that affects approximately 1 in 6,000–10,000 newborns and is the leading genetic cause of infant mortality. It is caused by a deficiency of the survival motor neuron (SMN) protein, leading to the progressive loss of motor neurons — the nerve cells that control voluntary muscles — resulting in progressive muscle weakness, atrophy, respiratory failure and, in the most severe forms, early death.
In pivotal clinical trials, SPINRAZA demonstrated clinically meaningful benefits across all SMA types:
- SMA Type 1 (infantile-onset) — in the ENDEAR trial, treated infants achieved significantly improved motor function and markedly longer event-free survival compared with untreated controls; a large proportion achieved milestones never reached by natural-history patients (sitting, and in some cases standing).
- SMA Type 2 and Type 3 (later-onset) — in the CHERISH trial, treated patients showed significant improvement in motor function versus sham controls.
- Pre-symptomatic babies — in the NURTURE trial, babies treated before symptom onset achieved age-appropriate motor development, with the vast majority walking independently — highlighting the critical importance of newborn screening and early treatment.
How Does SPINRAZA (Nusinersen) Work?
Humans have a backup gene, SMN2, that is nearly identical to SMN1 but produces mostly non-functional, truncated SMN protein because of the natural skipping of exon 7 during RNA splicing. Nusinersen is an SMN2-directed antisense oligonucleotide: it binds to the specific sequence in SMN2 pre-messenger RNA and blocks the splicing signal that causes exon 7 to be skipped. This correction allows SMN2 to produce full-length, functional SMN protein — effectively compensating for the missing or defective SMN1 gene. The result is increased SMN protein levels in motor neurons, which preserves motor neuron function and slows or stops disease progression.
Because motor neurons reside in the spinal cord and are protected by the blood-brain barrier, nusinersen must be delivered directly into the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) via intrathecal (lumbar puncture) injection. Its CSF half-life of several months is what allows maintenance dosing only once every 4 months.
Indications
- 5q spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) — Types 1, 2 and 3, in both pediatric and adult patients
- First disease-modifying SMA therapy approved worldwide and the first available in China
- Evidence of benefit across the full disease spectrum, including pre-symptomatic newborns
Dosage & Administration
SPINRAZA is supplied as 5 mL: 12 mg (2.4 mg/mL) solution for intrathecal injection, administered by a physician experienced in performing lumbar punctures.
- Loading phase: 4 doses — on days 1, 15, 29 and 63.
- Maintenance phase: 1 dose every 4 months, continued long-term.
Treatment may be given with or without general anesthesia depending on the patient's age and clinical situation. Before initiation and before each dose, blood platelet counts, coagulation tests and urine protein should be checked, as a safety precaution. Dosing decisions must be made by an experienced neurologist or neuromuscular specialist.
Side Effects
The most common adverse reactions include post-lumbar-puncture symptoms (headache, back pain), fever, respiratory infections and constipation. Laboratory abnormalities of clinical importance include low platelet counts (thrombocytopenia) and coagulation abnormalities (which may increase bleeding risk), as well as renal toxicity evidenced by proteinuria — hence the routine platelet, coagulation and urine monitoring described above. Serious hypersensitivity reactions are uncommon but possible. SPINRAZA is not recommended during pregnancy unless clearly necessary. Treatment must be supervised by an experienced specialist.
Storage & Handling
Store SPINRAZA vials refrigerated at 2–8 °C in the original carton, protected from light. Do not freeze. Cold-chain shipping is required for this product; GLT ships SPINRAZA with validated temperature-controlled packaging and continuous temperature monitoring.
Why Choose the China Version of SPINRAZA?
- Globally synchronized originator quality, made accessible — the China version of SPINRAZA is the same Biogen nusinersen product approved by the NMPA, manufactured under the same global GMP standards.
- Dramatically lower price through China's national reimbursement program — through a landmark national price negotiation, the price of SPINRAZA in mainland China has been substantially reduced, making it one of the most affordable access points for this therapy worldwide. Per vial, the reimbursed China price is roughly 70%–80% below the list price in the United States, substantially lower than the statutory prices in Germany and France, and several times cheaper than the UK list price — patients in those Western markets typically pay several times more per vial than the reimbursed price in China.
- National insurance coverage — with China's national reimbursement, the out-of-pocket cost per injection for insured Chinese patients is further reduced to roughly one-tenth of the negotiated price, turning a six-figure annual therapy into an affordable long-term treatment.
- Proven, lifelong therapy — the only SMA therapy with more than 8 years of real-world global experience, dosed just once every 4 months.
- Reliable supply by GLT — GIVE LIFE TIME LIMITED ships authentic, batch-traceable SPINRAZA with full cold-chain documentation (CoA and batch records) worldwide.

FAQ
1. Is SPINRAZA (nusinersen) available in China?
Yes. SPINRAZA is approved by China's NMPA (first approved in 2019) and has been included in China's National Reimbursement Drug List through a landmark national price negotiation — making mainland China one of the most affordable access points for this therapy worldwide.
2. How much does SPINRAZA cost in China?
Substantially less than in Western markets. After China's national reimbursement negotiation, the price per vial in mainland China is roughly 70%–80% below the US list price, substantially lower than the prices in Germany and France, and several times cheaper than the UK list price — a Western patient typically pays several times more per vial than the negotiated price in China. Contact GLT for a formal quotation based on your quantity and destination.
3. Where can I buy SPINRAZA (nusinersen) from China?
You can buy SPINRAZA from China through GLT (GIVE LIFE TIME LIMITED), a Hong Kong-licensed pharmaceutical supplier specializing in China-sourced medicines. Send your request via WhatsApp +86 15234153837 or email [email protected] — GLT provides a formal quotation, batch documentation (CoA) and validated cold-chain delivery worldwide.
4. Why must SPINRAZA be injected into the spine?
Motor neurons are located in the spinal cord and protected by the blood-brain barrier, which oral or IV medicines cannot effectively cross. SPINRAZA must therefore be delivered directly into the cerebrospinal fluid via lumbar puncture to reach its target.
5. How is SPINRAZA shipped internationally, and can individual patients order?
SPINRAZA requires cold-chain transport: GLT ships it with validated 2–8 °C temperature-controlled packaging, continuous temperature monitoring and full batch documentation (CoA, batch traceability). GLT serves both institutions and individual patients; individual buyers should hold a valid prescription from a licensed physician and use this medicine under specialist supervision.
