Product description

Generic Information: UJVIRA (India)

UJVIRA is Zydus Lifesciences' biosimilar of ado-trastuzumab emtansine, the world's first approved biosimilar antibody-drug conjugate of Roche's Kadcyla. Supplied as 100 mg and 160 mg single-use vials, it was launched in India in 2021 after the originator's patent expired, bringing the HER2-targeted ADC within reach of patients who could not afford the brand price. Indian clinical data have shown efficacy and safety comparable to the reference product.

What Is UJVIRA Used For?

UJVIRA is used to treat HER2-positive breast cancer, mirroring the originator's two indications. In metastatic disease it is given as a single agent to patients previously treated with trastuzumab and a taxane; in early disease it is used as adjuvant therapy for patients with residual invasive cancer after neoadjuvant taxane plus trastuzumab. As a biosimilar, it provides the same T-DM1 mechanism at a substantially lower cost — a decisive factor for self-funded patients and cost-conscious procurement programs.

How Does UJVIRA Work?

Like the originator, UJVIRA is an antibody-drug conjugate that joins the HER2-targeting trastuzumab antibody to DM1, a potent microtubule inhibitor, through a stable linker. The antibody homes in on HER2 receptors over-expressed on cancer cells, the conjugate is internalized, and DM1 is released inside the cell to disrupt mitosis and trigger cell death. This targeted delivery concentrates the cytotoxic effect on tumour cells while sparing healthy tissue.

Indications

UJVIRA is indicated for the treatment of HER2-positive breast cancer, covering both metastatic disease after prior trastuzumab and a taxane, and the adjuvant treatment of early breast cancer with residual invasive disease after neoadjuvant therapy. As with the originator, HER2 positivity must be confirmed by a validated test, and the drug is used as monotherapy in these settings.

Dosage

The recommended dose is 3.6 mg per kilogram by intravenous infusion every three weeks, the same weight-based regimen as Kadcyla. The 100 mg and 160 mg vial sizes allow accurate dose rounding, and the infusion is given over 90 minutes initially, then 30 minutes if tolerated. Treatment continues until disease progression or unacceptable toxicity.

Side Effects

The side-effect profile mirrors the originator: fatigue, nausea, musculoskeletal pain, headache and low platelets are the most common. The same serious warnings apply — liver toxicity, reduced heart function and fetal harm — so liver and cardiac function are monitored, and platelet counts are checked before each infusion to manage bleeding risk.

Storage

UJVIRA vials are refrigerated at 2°C to 8°C and protected from light, and the product is a cold-chain biologic. GLT ships through validated temperature-controlled logistics from a Hong Kong-licensed facility, with batch documentation and a certificate of analysis enclosed.

Why Choose UJVIRA Through GLT?

UJVIRA delivers the same HER2-targeted ADC mechanism as the originator at a fraction of the brand cost, a meaningful advantage for long-course treatment where affordability drives adherence. GLT's Hong Kong base provides documented, traceable cold-chain access to this Zydus biosimilar for overseas patients and importing pharmacies.
