Product description

Generic Information: Alunbrig (China-Mainland)

This is the China-Mainland version of Alunbrig, the Takeda brand of brigatinib, an oral second-generation anaplastic lymphoma kinase (ALK) inhibitor. It is supplied as film-coated tablets in 30 mg, 90 mg, and 180 mg strengths, each in a 28-tablet box. The 30 mg strength is used for the 7-day lead-in period, after which most patients step up to the 90 mg or 180 mg maintenance dose. Alunbrig was originally developed by Ariad Pharmaceuticals and is now marketed worldwide by Takeda.

What Is Alunbrig Used For?

Alunbrig is used to treat adults with anaplastic lymphoma kinase-positive (ALK+) advanced or metastatic non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). In China, the medicine is approved by the National Medical Products Administration (NMPA) and has been included in the national medical insurance drug list, which meaningfully lowers the out-of-pocket cost for eligible patients. A key strength of brigatinib is its ability to cross the blood-brain barrier, making it especially useful for patients whose disease has spread to the brain.

How Does Brigatinib Work?

Brigatinib is a next-generation ALK tyrosine kinase inhibitor. It potently and selectively blocks ALK, and it also inhibits ROS1, insulin-like growth factor-1 receptor (IGF-1R), and FLT-3, plus certain EGFR mutations. By shutting down ALK and its downstream signaling, brigatinib slows the growth of ALK-driven cancer cells. In the phase 3 ALTA-1L trial, brigatinib delivered a median progression-free survival of about 24 months versus 11 months for crizotinib, and it achieved a 78% intracranial response rate in patients with brain metastases at baseline.

Indications

Alunbrig is indicated as monotherapy for adults with ALK-positive, locally advanced or metastatic NSCLC. Genetic testing for the ALK rearrangement is required before treatment. It is suitable both as a first-line therapy and for patients who have progressed on or cannot tolerate crizotinib. The drug is not intended for patients whose tumors are ALK-negative.

Dosage

Treatment starts at 90 mg once daily for the first 7 days. If tolerated, the dose is then increased to 180 mg once daily. Tablets are taken with or without food, at about the same time each day, and should be swallowed whole without crushing or chewing. If a dose is missed, or if vomiting occurs after taking a dose, do not take an extra tablet — continue with the next scheduled dose. If treatment is interrupted for 14 days or more, it should be resumed at 90 mg daily for 7 days before returning to the previously tolerated dose.

Side Effects

The most common adverse reactions include diarrhea, rash, cough, hypertension, fatigue, nausea, myalgia, dyspnea, abdominal pain, and headache. Blood pressure should be monitored regularly, and diarrhea is usually manageable with supportive care. Interstitial lung disease and pneumonitis are serious but uncommon — treatment must be stopped permanently if they are confirmed. Patients with new or worsening breathing problems should seek medical attention promptly.

Storage

Store Alunbrig tablets at room temperature, below 30°C, in the original container, away from moisture and heat, and out of the reach of children. No refrigeration is required, which keeps home storage simple during long-term daily therapy.

Why Choose the China Version of Alunbrig?

The China version of Alunbrig is the same Takeda molecule as the versions sold in Western markets, but its reimbursed price is markedly lower than the United States list price, which is among the highest in the world for this medicine. For patients eligible for China's national medical insurance, the effective monthly cost can be a fraction of what the same branded drug would cost out of pocket in the United States or Europe. This makes China-sourced Alunbrig an attractive route to genuine Takeda brigatinib at a more accessible price point.
