RAFINLAR is the brand name under which Novartis markets its originator dabrafenib in India and parts of South Asia. Although the packaging name differs from the better-known Tafinlar, RAFINLAR is manufactured by Novartis and contains the same dabrafenib active ingredient. This listing supplies the 50 mg capsule in packs of 28, a smaller and more affordable pack size well suited to starting therapy or to dose-adjusted regimens.
Generic Information: RAFINLAR (India)
Novartis uses distinct brand names for dabrafenib in different regions. In India the originator is sold as RAFINLAR rather than Tafinlar, just as some other Novartis oncology brands carry region-specific names. The drug inside is unchanged: a selective inhibitor of mutated BRAF kinase.
What Is RAFINLAR (Dabrafenib) Used For?
RAFINLAR is used for BRAF V600-mutated cancers, including unresectable or metastatic melanoma, adjuvant melanoma treatment in combination with trametinib, and BRAF V600E-mutated metastatic non-small cell lung cancer and anaplastic thyroid cancer (both with trametinib).
How Does Dabrafenib Work?
The drug binds to and inhibits the mutant BRAF enzyme that keeps the MAPK growth pathway permanently activated in BRAF-mutant tumors. Switching off that signal suppresses tumor proliferation and can induce cancer-cell death. Combination with a MEK inhibitor adds a second block in the pathway and is standard care for most indications.
Indications
- Unresectable or metastatic BRAF V600-mutant melanoma
- Adjuvant melanoma therapy with trametinib
- BRAF V600E metastatic NSCLC with trametinib
- BRAF V600E anaplastic thyroid cancer with trametinib
Dosage & Administration
The standard total daily dose is 300 mg, taken as 150 mg twice daily. The 50 mg capsule is the lower of the two standard strengths and is used when the full dose is reduced — for example during a febrile episode or when tolerability requires a step down. A 28-capsule pack therefore covers roughly two weeks of a reduced twice-daily regimen.
Side Effects
Fever is the hallmark adverse event and may require holding the drug. Other common effects are fatigue, rash, nausea, headache, chills and joint pain. Serious risks include new skin cancers, hemorrhage, cardiomyopathy, uveitis and hyperglycemia. Dermatologic review and temperature monitoring are standard during treatment.
Storage & Handling
Store at room temperature in the original container, protected from moisture and light, out of the reach of children, and not past the expiry date.
